Peer Reviewed Author

I love science, and I have been lucky to be invited to work on meaningful work with renowned authors.

Notable Achievements

Collaborated and published a peer reviewed paper with medical doctors.

Twinamasiko, Bruce, Andrew Mutekanga, Olilanya Ogueri, Nakitto Irene Kisakye, Crystal M. North, Conrad Muzoora, and Daniel Muyanja. “Factors Associated with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Hospital-Based Case–Control Study.” International Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (2023): 2521-2529.

Lab Research Intern

Barnea Lab & Brown University’s Translational Neuroscience Outreach Program (TNOP)

I had two very rewarding science experience in the Summer of 2023:

I spent two months as a research intern at the Barnea Neuroscience lab of Brown University, studying how fruit flies use their sense of smell and taste to decide what to eat. I had the honor of being the first  high school student ever to work in the lab. We used Trans-Tango (a molecular tool used to map neural circuits) to label, track and manipulate specific neurons related to taste and smell.

I spent the later half of the summer as a Summer Intern/Science Communicator at the Brown University’s Translational Neuroscience Outreach Program (TNOP) . The program was  divided into three parts:

1) Out of 5 groups, my group partner and I were awarded the BEST group due to our rigor and got to create a Wikipedia page on the rare genetic disorder, SLC13A5 Citrate Transporter Disorder (also called SLC13A5 Epilepsy). Our Wiki page was adopted by the TESS Foundation, which is the foundation that heads funding and research for the genetic disorder. Because of this we also created and published a children’s book for those affected.

2)  Experimental Science: Working with scientists, we discussed and observed specific experiments and then analyze data. Examples of experiments that could be analyzed include imaging analysis, behavioral analysis, and EEG data, and patient survey data. Software used will be free, including Image J, Google Docs, and Sheets.

3) Career Development: We had panels composed of speakers at different careers and stages of training relevant for Translational Neuroscience. Examples include undergraduates, master’s students, PhD graduate students, medical students, MD/PhD students, neurologists, psychiatrists, neuropathologists, neurosurgeons, and psychologists. These panels focused on different educational and career pathways in STEM careers.

Notable Achievements

  • Research Proficiency: Both experiences sharpened my research skills, emphasizing the importance of accuracy and thorough understanding in scientific work.
  • Collaborative Dynamics: Working with a range of lab professionals and researchers,  has greatly improved my teamwork and communication skills.
  • Science Communication: I’ve learned the vital skill of explaining complex scientific topics in a way that’s understandable to the general public, bridging the gap between science and society.
  • Presentation & Engagement: Presenting our work to important figures, particularly from the TESS Foundation, highlighted the real-world impact of our research and developed my public speaking abilities.

President and Cofounder

President and Cofounder of the Non profit organization Youth4globalchange.

Our primary mission is peer to peer mentoring within our communities to tackle social justice issues and uplift our youth. We partnered with:

Notable Achievements

  • C12, a rehabilitation organization based in Nairobi, Kenya.
  • Prince to Kings, a mentorship program focused on uplifting the young men in our community.
  • Community Preparatory School, and the Gordon School.
  • We also volunteered at the JCC of Greater Rhode Island, and donated books, computers, and water tanks to two schools in the Maasai Mara in Kenya.

Activist

My mother took me with her on a research trip to Kenya. I noticed other young children didn’t have reading books like I did. When I came back to school I asked my teacher if she would help me organize my first fundraiser. I never looked back….

Notable Achievements

  • I have fundraised for impoverished schools in Masai Mara in Kenya. This led to a collaboration with Bryant University students where a Masai leader was invited to the United States.
  • I have worked with ARISE as a Youth Leader.
  • I was invited to Join GEnZ due to my activism during George Floyd Protests.
  • Co-Founded a Youth Organization.
  • Recently collaborated with a doctor from Uganda to start a NGO focused on healthcare awareness.
